When Hayato and I decided to get married it was still legally impossible to be married in either America or Japan. While we live in Japan, I am American and Hayato is Japanese, and our marriage having legal standing was deeply important to us. The day DOMA and the final legal obstacle to our marriage was struck down, June 26, 2013 was very special. We immediately began looking for information being married in California. On January 3, 2014, at the San Francisco City Hall we were married celebrated by family and friends. I remember, standing in the rotunda of San Francisco City Hall, looking into Hayato’s eyes and exclaiming to the world that I was forever binding my life to his. It was the most meaningful moment of my life, and the start of two destinies becoming one.
